We see this question asked pretty frequently, and we’d like to offer some tips about how to get started working at home when you have no experience.
Firstly, consider the experience you do have, whether it’s work or life-related. Chances are you know how to do SOMETHING, even if you haven’t done it in a job capacity. Then see if you can find remote jobs that would use the knowledge you have, or at least touch on them in some way.
Start with something easy
If you’re just starting out, aim for “easier” jobs to begin with, like online customer service. Some of the job vacancies in customer service don’t require experience; just good communication skills and a willingness to learn.
Other entry-level remote jobs to explore could be things like:
- Writing product descriptions or reviews
- Data entry jobs
- Updating website content
- Social media management
- Managing appointments
- SEO link building
- Basic graphic design using applications like Canva or Piktochart
- Audio transcription
This work might not be your dream remote job – and may not be a permanent full-time role – but you’ll be gaining some valuable remote skills. You can apply for other remote roles as you gain more experience.
Setup your own business
Now, we’re not saying you have to all of a sudden become an entrepreneur and start building a business. After all, not all of us are that way inclined. However, being setup in a business capacity so you can work as an Independent Contractor can be beneficial in today’s job market – it gives you options.
Even if you’re working in a traditional office job right now, you might be able to do some freelance gigs on the side to build up your remote skills AND earn some additional income. Sites like Fiverr.com are great for this sort of thing.
Some remote-friendly employers will employ you as an Independent Contractor versus an Employee. So if you have everything already setup, you can hit the ground running when a remote contract comes your way.
Educate yourself
It’s important to adopt a lifelong learning approach to your career. Find affordable online training courses that can help to expand your skills.
Look for classes in the skills that are currently in high demand. How do you know what skills employers are looking for? Simple! Go to our job board, find some jobs that interest you, read through the job description, and jot down all the skills they’re asking for.
And don’t just write down the technical skills – your people skills are equally as important. Soft skills are always highly sought-after and it’s these skills that can set you apart from other candidates.
