So you want to take the plunge and swap the traditional workplace for a remote job. Awesome! Here are some tips to help get you started.

It’s a big step, filled with excitement, and possibly a little fear. Not to worry. The team at Remote Work Hub has compiled some of our tried and tested tips from more than 20 combined years of working remotely to help you on your way to a successful remote career.

Your journey begins here.

1. First ask yourself is remote working really for me?

The idea of working from home is appealing to most, but the reality will only suit some. You need to be self-motivated, focused, disciplined, organised and prepared to learn new ways of doing things. If you think you can do that, you’re well on your way.

2. Know what to look for.

When searching for a remote job it’s important to know what to look for, and what to avoid. There are thousands of too-good-to-be-true job offers and false promises online, so avoid job ads promising unrealistic earnings and overnight work-from-home success. They are not legitimate remote jobs. Remote Work Hub screens every employer and job listing to ensure we only add genuine remote jobs to our database every day. Many of the positions not only allow you to work from home but can also give you the freedom and flexibility to work from anywhere.

3. Equip yourself.

You don’t need to spend a fortune on an office set up, but there are some essential items it pays to get. Most importantly, you need a reliable, fast computer with the latest software, good WiFi connection, and a smart phone. And for the majority of roles you’ll also need a good quality headset and webcam for online meetings with your team.

4. Polish your profile.

As a remote worker you become your own PR agent. Make yourself marketable by updating your LinkedIn profile and any websites or social media profiles relevant to your work. And ensure private accounts are kept private. Employers and clients will Google your name – make sure they like what they find.

5. Do more than dust off your CV.

When you’re transitioning from the traditional workplace to remote work, it’s more important than ever to update and tailor your CV accordingly. Whether you’re seeking remote work as an employee, independent contractor or freelancer, you need to demonstrate you are capable and ready to be a productive member of a remote team.

6. Get a professional photo.

This is a first for a lot of people, but as a remote worker you are more likely to use online platforms to market yourself or network with employers, clients and colleagues.  A professional photograph makes a great first impression and you will feel more comfortable sharing a professional picture of yourself rather than a phone selfie.

7. Make lists and get organised.

Some people can be initially overwhelmed by this new-found autonomy after years of having a boss looking over their shoulder every day. Get a clear understanding of the scope of your role and the time needed to complete tasks, then create a schedule or routine that works for you (provided it suits your employer and you get the job done in the required timeframe).

8. Remember to switch off.

As remote workers we literally live at work so it’s really important to learn how to switch off, and how and when to say no. Most people who work remotely do so to enjoy flexibility around family commitments and hobbies or simply to enjoy a better work-life balance. So make sure you’re getting that balance right.

9. Never stop learning.

When you leave the traditional work setting, up-skilling opportunities won’t automatically come to you. Either advancing your education and qualifications in your current field or requalifying in something new will open even more doors to great opportunities as a remote worker.

10. Stay connected to reality.

It is very easy to get immersed in the virtual world; studying, working, researching, shopping and socialising exclusively online. This might suit your personality and lifestyle, but don’t forget your friends and family in the ‘real world’. It’s important to spend quality time with them too. Setting aside time to get outdoors and ‘smell the roses’ is a great way to refresh your mind and body, and reboot your productivity.
